FATHER, FIREFIGHTER & FIREHOUSE SUBS FRANCHISEE: MEET KEN JONES

Father, Firefighter & Firehouse Subs Franchisee: Meet Ken Jones

In honor of Father’s Day on June 20, we are recognizing some of our amazing franchisee fathers who work closely with their children in their Firehouse Subs restaurants.

When it comes to Danville, Virginia franchisee Ken Jones and his son, KJ, it’s clear that a passion for heartfelt service and nurturing others runs in the family. Quickly approaching their fourth year with Firehouse Subs, the father-son duo are the epitome of the brand’s mission.

Ken recently shared his favorite parts of working alongside KJ -- and a few words of advice for new dads this Father’s Day.

In what capacity do you work with your son at Firehouse Subs?

I opened our Danville, Virginia restaurant in early 2018, and KJ has supported me as General Manager since that time. KJ is incredibly personable; he makes everyone around him feel special, including our crew members and guests. His talents have been a critical part of our success over the last three and a half years.

What’s your favorite part about being a dad?

As a parent, you’re expected to raise your children and teach them the lessons they need to succeed, then let them go into the world to try their own hand. Other people may come and go out of our lives, but the best part about family is that they are always in our hearts.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about owning and operating a restaurant within a family dynamic?

While we work together as businesspeople, it is also important that we take time to separate ourselves from work to enjoy each other as father and son. Respect is key, no matter which hat we are wearing.

Are there any similarities between being a father and a franchisee? If so, what?

One similarity between the two roles is the importance of nurturing others. Much like it’s a parent’s responsibility to be supportive of our children and provide them opportunities to learn, I feel the same responsibility to our crew members.

What does your ideal Father’s Day look like?

Enjoying some peace and quiet! In addition to being a business owner, I am also a captain with the Danville Fire Department, so an opportunity to soak up some family time and reflect on the last year means a lot to me.

What are each of your favorite Firehouse Subs?

My favorite is definitely the Firehouse Hero®. The Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket™ is KJ’s top choice.

What activities do you enjoy doing together outside of the restaurants?

KJ and I both share a love for the outdoors, so riding motorcycles and 4-wheelers is always great. We are also both big sports fans and enjoy kicking back to watch games together.

What advice do you have for new dads?

Cherish every single moment. Time is life’s most valuable commodity - it means so much to those you share it with and you can’t get it back.
